Honolulu City Lights is one of Hawai'i's favorite holiday traditions, a month-long celebration that lights up downtown and brings families together every December.
A Little History
The event began in 1985 under Mayor Frank Fasi as a small community gathering. Over the years, it has grown into an iconic display featuring Shaka Santa and Tutu Mele, decorated trees inside Honolulu Hale, and the Electric Light Parade. It's become a holiday staple for locals and visitors alike.
How to Enjoy It This Year
The season kicks off with the Opening Night Festival & Electric Light Parade on Saturday, December 6, 2025.
The displays run December 6 - January 1, centered around Honolulu Hale and the Civic Center Grounds.
Best ways to experience it:
Walk through Honolulu Hale's decorated halls
Explore the outdoor light displays
Hop on the Holiday Trolley
Visit on weeknights for lighter crowds
A Local Touch
The celebration shares its name with "Honolulu City Lights" by Keola Beamer and, Hawai'i Modern Realty agent, Kapono Beamer, a song that captures the emotion and nostalgia of home. Hearing it during the holidays is a reminder of how special this season is in Hawai'i.
